My letter to MP colleagues regarding the forthcoming election for a new Chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee.

Dear Colleague, 

It’s not just about stopping the virtue signalling. It’s about cracking down on shocking gang violence.

As the appalling spate of gun murders in Liverpool has tragically shown, there is a sub-culture of violent crime in too many communities in towns and cities across the UK.

Residents should be able to walk around their neighbourhood in safety and without fear.

The former prime minister's legacy is the reason why mandarins keep getting the economy completely wrong. In the midst of the Conservative leadership debates, with clear dividing lines on the economy dominating, the ghost at the feast turned up – Gordon Brown.

She fought in Government for a tougher policy on Beijing, while the Treasury, under Rishi Sunak, pushed for closer ties.

There is a huge amount at stake in this leadership contest. MP’s and later, Conservative Party members will pick the next Prime Minister which is very, very different from elections to pick the leader of a party in opposition.

She's right on the economy, and has the unshakable resolve to get the necessary but difficult reforms through Whitehall. We face huge challenges, from the global economic crisis, to the war in Ukraine and the rise of a dangerous China.

Whitehall must learn from the public and embrace the opportunities Brexit affords.

After endless negotiations with the EU, we have made little or no progress in resolving the problems the Protocol is creating.

It goes to the heart of Adam Smith’s values. Governments need to take action when markets act against the wellbeing of the people they serve.
